Ministry of Health

Pharmacy Clinical Services

The mission of the Pharmaceutical Services Division of the B.C. Ministry of Health is to advance the health of British Columbians by supporting optimal drug therapy. The Ministry works collaboratively with community pharmacy representatives to identify and pay for drug products and clinical services that deliver the best health care results and value to British Columbia residents.

As described in the Pharmacy Services Agreement, the Ministry has committed to distributing some of the savings to the PharmaCare program back to community pharmacies in the form of payments for patient-care initiatives and clinical services.

Current initiatives and services include:

Medication Review Services

  • Medication review is a patient-care service that seeks to enhance a patient’s understanding of, and improved health outcomes with, their medication regimen. Community pharmacy-based pharmacists can submit a fee to PharmaCare for medication review services provided to eligible recipients.

Prescription Adaptation

  • Pharmacists in British Columbia have the independent authority and accountability for adapting a prescription. Community pharmacy-based pharmacists can submit a fee to PharmaCare for adapting an eligible prescription.

Administration of Vaccinations

  • Specially trained pharmacists can administer vaccinations to patients. Pharmacists can also access selected vaccines from the publicly funded vaccine supply and administer these vaccines to patients at no charge to the patient. Community-based pharmacists can submit a fee to PharmaCare for administering selected publicly funded vaccines to eligible recipients.

BC Medication Management Project

  • Medication management is a patient-care service that promotes the safe and effective use of medications, increases patient ownership of their health, and helps patients achieve targeted medication therapy outcomes. Over 100 pharmacies are involved in a project examining the impact of medication management services on patients in British Columbia. This project continues until January 31, 2012.
